You should always apply display: block; to A elements when used to wrap other block elements. It's a quick-fix for many layout and accessibility problems. It may look the same, but you make it clearer to the engine and accessibility tools what is the interactable area. #WebDev #CSSBoxModel Posted on Vivaldi Social on

Issue number 100 000 just got logged in Vivaldi’s bug tracker. A meaningless milestone, for sure. Yet, it somehow still feels significant. Here’s to VB-100000! 🥳 Posted on Vivaldi Social on

Twitter is currently showing me old tweets from 2017–2020 when visiting profiles without being logged in. It applies to most active accounts. It really makes the platform feel alive and vibrant. #BirdSite #TheMuskEffect Posted on Mastodon on

“Microsoft now bends to Europe on links: Clicking a URL from a system service will actually open in your [default] browser.” — Thomas Claburn, The Register.
As the author or the EdgeDeflector utility program, I’m happy to see that Windows will finally respect the default browser setting instead of force-opening links in Microsoft Edge. (Does not appear to work in the #WindowsInsider Dev channel yet despite the mention in changelog.) https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/30/microsoft_windows_11_bing/ Posted on Mastodon on -
MacOS is beautiful and so is Mac hardware. However, you should never purchase anything from a company that fakes signs of an unsuccessful repair when there is nothing wrong with the replacement component. The depth of Cities Skylines 2’s simulation is astonishing. If you’ve ever enjoyed a city builder game, then check out the developer insight videos where they discuss individual components of the city simulation. #CitiesSkylines appears as nothing more than a dumb mobile app toy compared to #CitiesSkylines2. “This is some real tragedy of the commons shit. The web is becoming a miserable experience because some salesbro who is trying to meet his KPIs is doing stuff to marginally increase the number of paying customers. […] The more each [web]site tries to create its own little walled garden, the less valuable the open web becomes.” — Elizabeth Lopatto, The Verge https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/28/23618804/google-facebook-login-ads-web-design-hell Posted on Mastodon on

I want more transparency from web search results pages. Why were some keywords discarded? Why were others replaced with entirely different terms? Too often, I find myself staring at a list of results that bear no resemblance to the original query. Occasionally, I do find the substitutions useful — but more often than not, I don’t even see the connection between my search query and the results. #AlgorithmicTransparency #SERP #UX Posted on Mastodon on

The File System Access API is too limited. You can’t make a #WebApp that competes with native apps when you have to re-prompt the user for access to a local file or directory at the beginning of every page session (e.g. after reloading the tab). If you’re doing anything with files, you’re required to use a framework other than the Web Platform to accomplish it. Posted on Mastodon on

I’ve got 80 GB of data stored on a Windows 11 laptop that could be reduced to 11,4 GB. This should be the new #WebPlatform standard: deny by default. A handful of allow-by-default exceptions for PC vendors’ support sites that connect to a helper service on a specific port to identify the model and installed driver versions. One of very few legitimate uses. Posted on Mastodon on -

There’s now a pride theme featured at https://themes.vivaldi.net and some custom artwork on https://social.vivaldi.net/about for #Pride2023 🏳️🌈. I’ve pushed for these tiny things internally, but frankly I’m not good at the whole flag waving thing. Any ideas for us? I thought that society didn’t need Pride anymore. Then politicians in Poland and Russia — and lately even the USA — turned all shitheads on the whole inclusivity and diversity thing. The message clearly still needs to be communicated. ✊ Posted on Vivaldi Social on
